During my work for the Norwegian Public Roads Administration, I have bed lucky to have the possibility to write some very few publications, concerning tunnel ventilation and safety. My job is usually to write specifications, and standards for road tunnel control and monitoring.

The first one is about correlation between soot and NO inside the Bømlafjord tunnel, and was published in Journal of Environmental Monitoring with the title:

Air quality and ventilation fan control based on aerosol measurement in the bi-directional undersea Bømlafjord tunnel

Due to the lack of good, proved equipment for fire detection in road traffic tunnels, I was able to use time for testing this in the Runehammer test tunnel in Norway.

The main result from these test was, that for the purpose of fire detection, it is useless to test wit Heptane, or gasoline.

By igniting an old car, all results for fire detection was toppled.

The results from this test is available from Tunnelling and Underground space technology

The article is

Automatic fire detection in road traffic tunnels
